The Vaults of Ayaraigas were established by the deity Benevolence. He constructed them to shield one of his mortal manifestations, modeled in his own image - the Nithians. The creation of these vaults was precipitated by the escalating primordial menace, which four years after the birth of the Nithians would culminate in the Creation War.

Benevolence covertly stored the Vaults of Ayaraigas in secret locations along the northern rim of the Fangs of Steirgar. Each vault housed forty Nithians, all under the influence of a tremendously powerful temporal stasis spell. The Nithians remained in this enchanted state for 10,558 years, far exceeding Benevolence's original intentions due to his untimely demise. The Nithians emerged from this spell in 2510 LE, relocating to the Borngring lowlands.

The Vaults of Ayaraigas are constructed from blutium. Within this 5-foot-thick outer wall lies a 2-foot-thick inner wall made of saranite. As the Nithians departed, they left behind spider-like automations. In a few instances, the Nithians exited the Vault and stumbled upon a creature's lair, and in one case, emerged from the heart of a Svirfneblin city that revered the Vault as a hallowed monument.

It is uncertain how many Vaults exist or if any were breached before the Nithians emerged from temporal stasis. Many of the Vaults discovered since the Nithians' departure have been stripped of any valuable resources, sometimes leaving behind only the crumbling walls of saranite, while others have become the dwelling places of fearsome creatures. The Nithians undertook expeditions to these Vaults, retrieving technology that facilitated the development of Clone Tanks.
