Vistlod, created during the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), continuously spews lava from openings along the mountain's southern and western slopes. Each a formidable spillway enclosed by an ancient fortress, they were constructed to impede the advance of demons streaming northward, the vanguard hordes of Demogorgon. In the Demon Spawn War, aligned with the Covenant, the peak of Vistlod and the surrounding region's other volcanoes served as strongholds under the leadership of a primordial named Surtur. In the book Square Nails, the author laments at length over Surtur's impregnable fortresses, mountains of fire resistant to siege as long as they remained connected to that Great Vein of Surtur.

The towering volcanoes of Vistlod and its sister Trylming are collectively known as the Daughters of Surtur. Both these formidable peaks possess super-hardened bases with lava tubes plunging into the enigmatic Pools of Geintar.
