In the Core Offensive (1749 - 1760), the Orchish Empire constructed an upland canal stretching from Lake Virgath to the Mazgob swamp. After completing the VMC, the empire dredged channels through this wetland and then along the Irudrarg River. By 1759, the empire's nascent navy were navigating the Core Sea.

At the canal's southernmost terminus lies the city of Hrornskar. Formerly an impoverished settlement, the canal's construction transformed it into a thriving lake port. A contemporary news report stated:

The growing number of ships filling the area, vessels more suitable for vast seas, puzzles many onlookers. Dockyard workers speak of skilled foreign shipwrights arriving from distant places like Paradomea City and nearer locales such as Blackjammer. Though they remain silent, we comprehend the intentions of the High Command. They seek to claim a portion of the Core Sea. While maritime commerce beyond land routes offers benefits, does the true motive involve threatening our northern neighbor, the Khazarkar Empire, with both land and sea assaults?

The canal is exceptionally broad in certain segments. These expansive areas are the result of sabotage by Quellestir's indigenous population. During their conflict with the Orchish Empire, the Forstneblin collapsed the canals, draining them into subterranean tunnels and the profound depths below. Following the Core Offensive, the Orchish Empire relinquished claims to the land corridor traversing Quellestir. Party to the Treaty of Quellestir, the Forstneblin ceased their sabotage and other acts of hostility towards traffic on the canal. Since that time, benefiting from significantly increased commerce, villages and towns have proliferated along the canal to the sea.
