Long exposure to Zugg's Gallstones, more commonly referred to as deep rocks, either terminates creatures or, in infrequent situations, genetically modifies them. They transform into a mutant, and most significantly for those who possess one, an entity immune to the agent that transformed them.
Beneath Paradomea's subterranean stronghold lies Undercity, a labyrinthine network of mines known as Gandûm-Thûr. This dwarven-named region is bountiful with silver ore and crystal deposits, yet also harbors an abundance of Zugg's Gallstones. The challenge facing all who venture to this area is how to extract the valuable resources without sacrificing too many of their miners.
In the Second Epoch, Syndic Lasestrov endeavored to devise methods for mining this region without incurring catastrophic losses to his workforce through exposure. This pursuit culminated in the establishment of the Mutant Progress Bureau and the subsequent creation of the initial Mutants.
The miners' living conditions resemble a factory environment, devoid of any semblance of dignity. No individual with a shred of honor would consider consorting with a mutant, as they possess an unsettling and abnormal appearance, akin to monstrosities. Consequently, the Bureau, under the guise of "Progress," has instituted a system of farming these individuals.
Mutants are incapable of breeding with one another, much like a Tragaran cannot reproduce if they mate with a standard animal, but a mutant and a Tragaran will always engender another mutant. Their "progress" is essential, for only they can endure the arduous Gandûm-Thûr mines. You may not have realized it amidst your hectic routines, but a tenth of the empire's soldiers are mutants. Are we evolving into a nation of engineered abominations?
Paradomea's Doom Squads consist primarily of mutants known as Doom Soldiers.
