The civil war encompassed the islands of Necrocrypt. It commenced only days after the downfall of the Durkoth -led Abâthigûr Empire. The empire's collapse had been years in the making, steadily declining as more and more Durkoth joined what would later be termed the Durkoth Descent ( 995 HE - 1355 HE ) .

After the last of the Durkoth departed for the depths, the next in line assumed their positions as overlords. These were the Hydrocur. They considered this the natural order of affairs. It had always been this way - Durkoth, then Hydrocur, then Sussgurd. Dating back to the era before the Horgon Empire, the Hydrocur had served as enforcers and overseers for their Durkoth masters, managing the Sussgurd minions. However, the Sussgurd, descendants of those who had escaped the Second Suellk Invasion ( 430 HE - 537 HE ) , contested this unlawful claim. They legally demonstrated that no statute had been written declaring the Hydrocur as the sole rightful leaders. The Hydrocur's defense argued that the Durkoth's insanity, brought on by their mutations, had led them to abandon all they had once prized. Thus, the Hydrocur would need to proceed based on precedent, with themselves as masters, the Sussgurd as enforcers, and others filling the roles the Durkoth had once held. When the Hydrocur-led court ruled in their own favor, the Sussgurd rebelled.

The rebellious Sussgurd retreated to the jungles and highlands of Gathrot and its neighboring islands, using guerrilla tactics against their new overlords. In the war's fourth year, the Hydrocur forces corralled the rebels towards Maphas-Kas. In this region, particularly at the Cinnuru Mine, the rebels fell victim to powerful undead, necromantic traps, and other malevolent influences left behind by Molakh-Búle. Many rebels were transformed into the undead, turning against the living and either slaughtering them or converting them to the undead as well. For the remainder of the civil war, the undead preyed upon elements of both sides.

In 1019 HE, the Hydrocur departed from the rebels. They left islands overrun by the undead, relocating their entire population to Ginnoth. Some Sussgurd managed to escape to the Karnegmoth colonies, while those who did not succumb to the same fate.
