In 921, miners from the town of Phaluth and other settlements across Mîn-Mazan began excavating the solitary peak of Zigil. This hallowed site was dedicated to the Earthen who served under Storralk during the Abyssal Release (7777 DE - 8777 DE). However, the miners encountered resistance from Galeb-Duhr, stone giants, and earth elementals. As the opposition intensified, the empire of Phlehorn (92 - 1080) deployed its army to the site.

In 1080, Phlehorn's forces breached the Earth Shrine. Nearing defeat, the defenders at the heart of the temple opened its grand doors, unsealing a rift to Chaos. The rift's opening unleashed a storm of rocks and debris, annihilating hundreds of the attackers. Carrying the banners of Storralk, hordes of earth archons emerged from the rift, mercilessly slaughtering the wounded and repelling Phlehorn's forces. Those wounded in the Earth Shrine fell victim to a dark curse. Returning to their strongholds, the survivors spread the Earth Skin Rot, bringing about the downfall of the Kingdom of Phlehorn within a year.

The defenders of Zigil are purported by certain theologians to have made a pact with the plague god Rioch Tetrax. In exchange for their future devotions, Rioch Tetrax provided them the means to disseminate a virulent malady. This affliction, erroneously dubbed Earth Skin Rot by many, was designated by Rioch Tetrax as Vector 32A-D7. Still active in the environs of Phaluth, it is transmitted when one is struck by cursed spectres known as the Pawns of Rioch Tetrax.
