The Trial of Asmodeus occurred during the Demon Spawn War ( 89 GE - 269 GE ) . The Quara'tun Covenant levied charges against its Supreme Commander, Asmodeus, and his loyalist generals.

The Covenant promptly assembled a delegation that hastened to Dis. To their astonishment, the previously nondescript expanse of Tyr-Mourn had metamorphosed into training grounds for malevolent entities adept at confronting the demons on their own ground.

They discovered an illicitly utilized Well of Afterlife, one intended for nefarious purposes. They observed souls emerging in their transformed states, monstrous entities constructed for battling demons.

"What goes on here?", Heironeous demanded.

"The higher authority has granted us the power to harvest souls," Asmodeus responded. "To safeguard the Forge Worlds and take the battle to the adversary, we inevitably had to discover means to accomplish this."

Heironeous, empowered by the Quara'tun Judges, thundered, "It is your responsibility to penalize transgressions, not to condone them!"

The most grievous charge was the establishment of a clandestine army to battle the demons. This necessitated the recruitment of individuals with a particular disposition - ruthless, and willing to fight to the extremes where genocide and no quarter were the norm. A Well of Afterlife on Dis, placed there by Asmodeus and Dispater, was utilized in the creation of these secret soldiers. Attuned to specific energies, the Well drew in souls with Negative Entropy and Unholy Energy. Coaxed out of the Well, these souls were given new vessels, carefully designed bodies, becoming one of the many variants of the Devil race. Fully formed at the moment of their creation, they were dispatched to training camps, indoctrination centers, and then sent to combat the demonic hordes.

Asmodeus's clandestine legions were no mystery to certain Covenant higher-ups. From their perspective, Asmodeus excelled as the Covenant's supreme commander, and by all accounts, his secret armies effectively safeguarded the Forge Worlds and carried the battle to the enemy's home realms.

Presided over by the Quara'tun Judges, those charged and found guilty were Asmodeus, Dispater, Geryon, Baalzebul, and the money boss Mammon. On 3 Lunar 255 GE, they were banished from the Mortal Systems, joining the ignominy of the Fallen Angels.

Asmodeus smiled, and the thick haze of a thousand fierce conflicts billowed from his lips. "As the Lord of Battle," he remarked, "you should understand better than anyone that warfare is a grimy enterprise. We have stained ourselves so that you may keep your radiance. We have upheld the statutes, not violated them." [ 1 ]
