Hyassalmo was founded during the Horgon Era by Drow colonists from Eldalweril. In the Eldalweril Civil War, Hyassalmo seceded from the Eldalweril empire. Five years after this conflict, in Year 23, Hyassalmo was appointed the new capital of Eldalweril, replacing the long-standing capital of Jhaldrym, which had held that distinction for over a millennium. This change came about due to the urging of a previously obscure Drow house in Hyassalmo, House Agrach Dyrr, which had risen to become the most powerful across all of Eldalweril's territories by the end of the war.

In the First Epoch, Hyassalmo was the primary sponsor of raids along Eáránë Aldaríon and into the surface lands of Taurelin. In the Second Epoch, Angrod had grown weary of these incursions, resulting in the High Down War (1285 - 1304). By war's end, Eldalweril lay in ruins. The capital city of Hyassalmo was ravaged and depopulated by Angrod's military. The citizenry could not return, as sentient vines, the Tendrils of Taurquion, had infiltrated the walls and streets. These surface vines eventually died, releasing noxious fumes, poisonous gas, or becoming havens for mutative spores; a side effect of the Lith-Crillion technology that emerged from the Pyramid of Nature. Some of these spores budded into fungal lifeforms, rendering Hyassalmo uninhabitable and a ruin.
