Callarduran was a Creationist. In this capacity, on 9 Bliss 8750 DE, he created the gnome race in his likeness, though far less exotic. Towards the conclusion of the Dawn Era, the initial gnome civilization emerged in the Zythess region of Bal-Kriav.
In the Demon Spawn War (89 GE - 269 GE), the armies of Jurusalax abandoned Kriav and initiated the invasion of a world already reeling from Demon incursions. The Núlananya Rift was utilized by the invaders to assault Honmin and the other regions of the continent Hezmort. This subsidiary conflict of the Demon Spawn War is known as the Zythess Front. In this war, the demonic armies were challenged by those under Callarduran. When Ares, then Supreme Commander of the Quara'tun Covenant, issued orders to withdraw from Hezmort, Callarduran refused, stating that he could not abandon the gnomes. Callarduran failed to halt the waves of demons pouring through the Núlananya Rift. He saved his gnomes, but perished while battling Jurusalax and more than a hundred runehounds. The Gimrune have a legend regarding this, claiming that it was not Jurusalax who delivered the fatal blow, but rather a mound of dead hounds that suffocated the great Callarduran.
The demon invasion of Hezmort resulted in the gnomes fracturing into three distinct factions. Those who fled underground transformed into the Svirfneblin, while those who escaped by air became the scattered and elusive Forstneblin. The final group remained behind, fighting valiantly alongside their creator. The survivors of this doomed struggle were subjugated by their demonic overlords, henceforth known as the Gimrune.
