In 1823, following months of maneuvering and deception, the forward elements of the Witch Horde discovered a vulnerability in the chain of outposts and fortifications safeguarding civilization. Within a week, the city of Helmstar found itself under siege. Led by a witch war councilor named Arhibess, it was a war intended to quench the thirst of their war deity.

After the fall of Helmstar, battles were waged both eastward and westward against a hastily formed alliance known as the Luran Alliance. Ambassadors from Malacost offered soldiers and armaments, but their overtures were rebuffed. The northern peoples of the Luran Alliance were determined to demonstrate their ability to maintain independence from their southern neighbor and preserve their devotional practices, which Malacost had dismissed as "crusader visions barely tempered by good".

In 1827, the city of Helmstar was liberated. During the occupation, it had been ravaged by looting, rape, fires, and the forced relocation of its citizenry northward as slaves. Cathandril, the commander of the Luran Alliance, vowed to restore the city through both martial and spiritual means. After the war, true to her promise, Cathandril succeeded in recovering nearly all the surviving slaves, an accomplishment that compelled Helmstar to vote in favor of becoming a territory of the Divine Empire.

The Luran Alliance surged northward into the Northern Hordelands, vanquishing their adversaries and erecting war shrines to Athena along the route. The outmoded fortifications of the Northern Hordelands proved no match for the devastating firepower of Athena Hammers and Bearded Bellies.

At the Battle of Qijerqul, the Witch Horde's leader, Arhibess, was slain by Cathandril. Defeated, the Witch Horde sought peace terms. The reparations stipulated the return of all Helmstar's slaves, and Kugirmuk became a holding of the Divine Empire.
