Long ago, the area where Elgatâz now stands was a summer camp used by Tungesti hunters and trappers. The Tungesti were driven from the region by Tragaran trappers who arrived with the Great Exodus (998 - 1017). By the year 1205, the former trapper camp had evolved into a permanent settlement. As the Tragarans encountered aggressive states like the Orchish Empire, Elgatâz became the first line of defense against incursions descending from Khilag-Tarkin.
In the year 1476, the city of Elgatâz was conquered by the undead forces of the Black Tide War, a conflict that raged from 1465 to 1486.
Elgatâz lies situated along the northeastern coastlines of Galathien. The city extensively spreads across the edge of a series of immense waterfalls. The river Anassúmë nourishes the waterfalls and at one point gradually eroded the foundations of the city. However, the erosion has been halted through the implementation of permanent magical safeguards.
Much of the trade and latest fashions from Hells Womb arrive in this city, disseminating westward to the Divine Empire and Malacost. Elgatâz is renowned for its exceptional leatherwork. The city's commercial ventures predominantly flow to destinations such as Helmstar, Symdar, and Maharâg.
Elgatâz is a cosmopolitan city said to house at least one of every race, including Tragarans, Theegans, Turkûn, Nermaneans, and dozens more, along with many half-breeds. This latter group, primarily half-elves and half-orcs, come here to escape stigmatization in parts of Hells Womb and the "holier than thou" holds of the Lands of Purity. As a result of this diversity, and the significant damage the city endured from the Black Tide War and the Athenian Crusade (1539 - 1551), it took Elgatâz 12 years before being admitted as a state of the Country of Malacost.
