The city-state of Nemegral, situated in the northern expanses of Chen'gom, is a tributary to the mighty Ningizzida Empire. Governed by a confederate administration, Nemegral's leadership is vested in the tribal chieftains known as the Barbagan.
The city of Nemegral is a dismal, foul-smelling place. The urban core sits atop a rugged hillock, encircled by the Ugrol wetlands, teeming with insects. As the settlement expanded, its borders encroached upon the swampland, necessitating the construction of sizeable buildings erected on stilts above the waters. Some dwell in these perpetually damp, wooden structures, while others reside beneath the elevated platforms, mired in the muck below.
The city is near lawless, with its inhabitants holding a "might makes right" mentality. Nemegral has abysmal sanitation, serving as a haven for disease and illness, and is perilous to visit for those unaccustomed to such conditions.
The primary exports of the city are weaponry, poisons, and acids. The waterborne approaches to the city navigate a maze of fisheries and outposts constructed amidst magically fortified cypresses and mangroves. These trees, as well as those integrated into the walls of Nemegral, have been druidically enchanced to resist blight, fire, and decay. Nemegral boasts a formidable garrison of trolls and Viidostor led by necrothanes, accompanied by a few black dragons and several War Troll companies.
Long before the city was founded, the surrounding area had a rich tradition of producing formidable warlike tribes. When conflicts erupted in the Troll Bogs, the Urgol marshes served as a hub for recruitment and clandestine operations. The warring factions often ensured that the yuan-ti, trolls, and Viidostor tribes became embroiled in their own feuds, preventing them from becoming mercenaries for the opposing side. The region's martial mindset is believed to stem from an ancient, partially submerged shrine at the heart of Ugrol. The only visible part of the War Spirit Shrine is the head of a warrior. During the Horgon Era, those who could reach the shrine would be blessed with enhanced senses, agility, and strength. Over time, these frequent visitors became the mouthpieces of the war god Ares, spreading his doctrine among their people and unleashing their shamanic powers against their enemies and dissenters. The worship of Ares remains deeply rooted in the populace of Nemegral, with the war shamans often wielding significant influence over the Barbagan. Meanwhile, the most widely revered deity in Nemegral is Semuanya.
