The yuan-ti race emerged during the Lith-Crillion Era from malevolent experiments performed on Tragaran captives. At the time, Varelay's ruler Aperoq gradually eroded the power of Tilnangau. As a means of undermining this empire, abhorrent experiments on Tragaran captives led to the creation of the yuan-ti.

The yuan-ti spread to Hells Womb in 1110 LE. These settlers were dispatched from Varelay. During their northward voyage, they overthrew their demonic overlords, emerging as a free people. A modest settlement took root within the caves and crags of Rat. By the Horgon Era, the yuan-ti population had expanded across the Saknussem jungle, before later encroaching upon Sinarag toward the era's conclusion. Over the ensuing millennia, and by the time of the Great Exodus ( 998 - 1017 ) , yuan-ti civilization had declined into petty satrapies and small clans, with their once-prosperous eastern trading hubs becoming the haunts of beasts and monsters. Today, most of Saknussem's yuan-ti are citizens of the Council of Bile, while those of Sinarag serve the Ningizzida Empire.

In the Varelay Upheaval ( 2608 LE - 16 HE ) , certain yuan-ti followed the Tragarans into Azrik and Gulimbor, then journeyed northward to the coasts of Brucrumus. The descendants who remained after the Varelay episode are now integrated into Malshirk'iss or have established homes across the vast Gurutharni Swamp.
