The inaugural war troll was conceived by Rilthang and a collective of hags. They delved into ancient tomes of Primordial knowledge and mastered a ritual to augment the intellect and combat proficiency of a subject. Their experiments proved successful only on trolls, as the damage from the transformation often proved fatal for any creature lacking robust regenerative capabilities. The hags triumphantly created the first war troll on 28 Witchrite 1000. In Sareon, Rilthang's war trolls assisted her in repelling adversaries and seizing control of a substantial swath of northern Thingrorn.

After the death of Rilthang (c.f 1120), her quarters were ransacked. The knowledge of making war trolls was then lost for several hundred years. In 1508, following setbacks in their war with the Orchish Empire, Toomrur shamans sent agents into Sareon in search of the lost knowledge of making war trolls. They could not find any scrolls, books, or other lore-keeping devices, so they pried it from the mind of a Sareon hag. The one that proved most useful was a descendant of one of the coven hags that worked alongside Rilthang. When war trolls were added to the ranks of KhatĂșlg's army, the First Ogre War took a turn. They began to cause morale problems for those of the Fograth who faced them.

A contingent of merely ten of these elite trolls can inflict the same level of destruction as 100 Hangath goblin archers. They are equally lethal in close-quarters combat, necessitating the deployment of elite forces to subdue them. The Emperor himself descended from the Spire to assist in dealing with one such group. Amidst a barrage of lightning, poison gas missiles, fireballs, and a hail of arrows, and facing a multitude of assailants from all directions, he teleported into the midst of ten war trolls, subduing five of them before being compelled to retreat. Now, what we require is five more such individuals. A rumor has been circulating that mages are being brought in to begin charming these trolls and turning them against the enemy, which would provide a significant morale boost for the troops.

Sergeant Golat, of the Fograth 5th Division, 4th Platoon, delivered a rousing "Morale Boost" speech to his troops

War trolls are selectively bred and trained for combat, not naturally occurring creatures found in the wild unless their community dedicates substantial effort towards teaching them martial proficiencies. Most war trolls gain their specialized expertise within the militaries of empires such as the Tormoran Federation, Orchish Empire, and the Toomrur Hegemony.
