The hilly forest of central Grashakh and lower Miradelgûn is known as Hangath. It serves as the home to both goblins and Nermaneans. The Nermaneans are descendants of Maurkac and other holdings of the once-powerful Nermanis Syndicate, which existed from 712 to 923. As the Nermanis Sea began receding in 920, some Nermaneans migrated to Hangath, constructing numerous small enclaves along the Dargirth River.
Hangath's Nermaneans fell from grace during a time of scarcity known as the Dead Harvest (1130 - 1135). This devastating famine drove many to desperate measures, with some even resorting to consuming their goblin enemies and their own kin. Such behavior, though born of survival, was deemed abhorrent by their patron deity, Avandra, who subsequently abandoned them. In their despair, the halflings turned to The Glutton, as many had already been loosely affiliated with the dark deity, given that the initial act of becoming a follower requires consuming the flesh of one's own race. The continued misery of the Dead Harvest and Avandra's abandonment left the people vulnerable to conversion, and by the end of the five-year blight, 30% of Hangath's populace had become followers of The Glutton. They continue the practice of cannibalism, consuming the bodies of those killed in combat, but not those who die of natural causes, as they consider such corpses defiled. Since the Dead Harvest, most of the area's halflings have converted to The Glutton or some other fell god.
The two major factions of Hangath are the goblins and the Children of the Glutton. Perpetually engaged in combat, they are seasoned warriors who make prime recruits for the armies of the Orchish Empire. The Hangath goblins produce highly skilled archers, with the elite known as Hangath Archers, while the halflings yield some of the finest slingers on Brucrumus. The Fograth utilize these halfling slingers in roles suited to their abilities. Starved before battle, the halflings are deployed as shock troops, satiating their hunger and appeasing The Glutton.
The goblins of Hangath are descendants of an army that once served under Maglubiyet during the Demon Spawn War, which spanned from 89 GE to 269 GE. In the bogs of Droonesh, this army became trapped between two demon armies - one loyal to Demogorgon, the other to Baphomet. The resulting melee crippled all three forces, leaving the remnants of Maglubiyet's army to remain in the general vicinity.
