Gathrot is the largest island of the Necrocrypt region. The island boasts two active volcanoes, the Gruggvein and the Groarnfer. Fortunately for the undead that roam the island, lava and eruptions generally flow northward. The smoke from these peaks, however, is pushed by the notoriously unpredictable winds of the Sea of Mourning. This smoke can become thick, blanketing an area like a deep fog, posing a serious navigational hazard for those traversing the crystal blue waters with a seabed scattered with bones and the wreckage of hundreds of ships.
The Shiphis Helas traversed the Void for numerous centuries, the journey culminating in the dispersion of Bal-Kriav's clouds. The vessel's hibernation chambers cooled, liberating me and my crew. Lacking any say in our landing site, we found ourselves on a lush, tropical isle - an ill-suited location to establish a civilization.
From the depths of the dawn-forged edifice, we Durkoth were trailed by the Hydrocur battalions, and a stalwart Sussgurd labor force.
Molakh-BĂșle, excerpt from his journal - "The New World"
In 1017, twenty-two years into the Gulimbor Cataclysm ( 996 - 1203 ) , the Melephaeusans abandoned their Gulimbor homeland and resettled on Gathrot. Tragically, their new settlement was short-lived, for they were brought down by one of their own - a long-serving civil servant named Caliguworm.
The undead ships often conceal themselves within the smoke clouds and the perpetual Mists of Gathrot that envelop the island. These mists can be thin and wispy at times, presenting minimal challenges for navigation and reaching the shores, while at other instances they linger thick and dense for prolonged periods. The Black Tide frequently leverages the obscuring veil of the dense fog banks when preparing for a significant naval mobilization preceding an invasion.
Gahtrot and its smaller counterparts were initially settled during the Horgon Era. This endeavor was spearheaded by Molakh-BĂșle and his devoted Durkoth followers.
