The Athena's Daggers is a cluster of majestic, soaring spires situated amidst a vast, arid, wind-swept plain. Spanning an expansive fifteen square miles, the mountainous region culminates in the tallest spire, which reaches a towering height of 18,000 feet.

Over the ages, many have inhabited this region. Vast caves, labyrinths, and ruins dot the area, some constructed by Demogorgon's armies, then by goblins, who thrived here during the age of the Lith-Crillion, followed by those serving dragon satraps in the Horgon Era, and others thereafter. The most enduring residents of this untamed landscape are the stone giants. They maintain a half-dozen villages and hundreds of homesteads scattered throughout the region, considering themselves the caretakers of Athena's Daggers. The stone giants preserve the ancient sites, including the Horgon Era dragon-sized labyrinths and places deeper within the spires. This innermost area is known as the Cairn Ascent, home to the ancient holy bastions of Phollûmâ, which once defended against Demogorgon's forces.

In the Second Epoch, the dragons returned to the area, reclaiming the abodes of their ancestors. These were predominantly blue dragons, drawn to the region's higher-than-average frequency of thunderstorms. The reason for the dragons' resurgence was the presence of a dragon cult, the Tîra-Phâth. In 1065, they established themselves in one of the old dragon lairs, and since that time have destabilized the surrounding area when advantageous, extorted money for "keeping the dragons at bay," and sold trained blue dragons to the Council of Bile.

In the Black Tide War (1465 - 1486), the region faced a grave threat from the northward advance of undead legions. However, the giant caretakers, together with Tîra-Phâth's dragons and allies, successfully thwarted the Dead Council's attempt to claim dominion over the area, particularly the strategic Sorrow Pass.

Athena's Daggers possesses numerous passages leading to the Underdark. Through the Cairn Ascent, one can reach the polluted lake Maitimírë. This body of liquid, tainted by the waters of the Styx River, serves as a source for the highly sought-after stone known as Styx Granite. Consequently, this results in substantial traffic and conflict along the Cerulean Road, which passes Phollûmâ's hallowed citadels.
