Groa Torveig is a magnificent lava lake situated near the heart of the Anubeth Region. It is continuously fed by a number of volcanoes that persistently expel rivulets and rivers of lava into it. Additionally, it receives lava and other matter expelled from numerous unstable, and often short-lived rifts to Muspelheim. These rifts are randomly scattered throughout the area, some opening directly over the lake, creating the illusion of lava waterfalls or an invisible entity dumping smoldering rocks from nowhere. The remaining rifts are situated within the lava or on the islands of hardening rock. All of these rifts are an indirect consequence of the magic emanating from the Pumice Throne. The rifts in the lava can be distinguished by their appearance as flaming towers of liquid rock or extremely hot pockets of lava that glow blue. While the rifts are not particularly large, they are sizeable enough to accommodate mephits and other small fiery creatures.
Beyond the perils of intense heat and thick smoke, thousands of mephits, and hundreds of salamanders and fire elementals lurk. Some are under the command of the region's fire giants and Furrouth, while the remainder serve as potential recruits, pressed into service as soldiers of Cinderfall. The quick-witted may evade service for a time, but all play a role in the machinations of those engaged in the Thrones War. To traverse the vast expanse of this fiery sea, giants and other fiery brutes commandeer massive lava stone barges. These barges require a formidable guard, as fire drakes and other ill-tempered beasts of the region prey on anything weaker than themselves.
