The ancient fortress of Khilgand is situated within the confines of the Vale of Thaena.
Khilgand is surrounded by a labyrinth of canyons, ravines, and broken land, all entwined within a dense evergreen forest. Intricate bridges and walkways wind through these trees, a testament to the work of the Eärendur in a time of great desperation. From the towering walls, one can hear the thunderous roar of mighty rapids. In the stillness of night, when even the nocturnal creatures pause, the sound of water flowing deep within the cracks can be detected, and the pervasive moisture can be felt, though its origin remains elusive. Some of the staff jokingly suggest that the formidable Creationists simply never got around to completing this land. Others whisper of an ancient prison, a source of power, that Nveryioth chose as the foundation for his great hold. I am here to inform you that the mystery has been solved. The waters that enter the Vale of Thaena are in fact chains, magically intertwined around an exceptionally potent being.

Construction on Khilgand commenced in 1594 HE. The building was undertaken by those who revered Nveryioth, as if he were destined for divinity. The Eärendur were assisted by thousands of Ogre slaves, descendants of those who had once served under Ogtha. The mortar of the structure was blended with the pulverized remains of a primordial sand worm named Khilgand, who had been slain long ago by Golruwyrm and had since become petrified in the Sands of Hell. These fossilized remains were transported overland for nearly 400 miles. Once they reached the rugged terrain of the Vale of Thaena, the precious bones were carried by wing to the growing construction site of Khilgand.
Late in the Horgon Era, the forces of Khilgand threatened as far north as Belêth-Kazîr where they were checked by the eldritch giants and their army of mages, golems, and magical creatures. By the dawn of the Second Epoch, Khilgand had laid claim to territory as far west as Sareon and was perpetually embroiled in conflict with the minions of Rilthang. As the Second Epoch progressed, Nveryioth was no longer the aggressor, with the formidable Orchish Empire proving too large to assail. The High Command then forged a treaty with Nveryioth, providing gold for Khilgand's upkeep and other expenses. In return, Nveryioth would aid the Orchish Empire in its conflicts.
Khilgand's garrison is composed of numerous Hobgoblin tribes, totaling nearly 10,000 soldiers. They compete for Nveryioth's favor, leading to infighting between the factions, much to their lord's delight. Khilgand's defenses also include a skeletal legion, primarily used to occupy the vast expanse of the place and deter any who seek to plunder its rumored riches. These rumors are often propagated by Nveryioth, with the intent of luring adventurers into her lair. The stronghold's most skilled and dependable soldiers are the dragon cultists of the Sos Vrii. The history of this dragon cult, now a cell of Vith Alok, and Nveryioth dates back to when a hobgoblin sorcerer named Kynux approached Nveryioth with a proposal: Kynux and his growing retinue would guard Khilgand's grand corridors while its master slept. This forged a great friendship, a legendary dragon and the land's oldest hobgoblin master sorcerer, leading Khilgand's defense.
