Marakellûth was constructed during the Creation War by forces under the command of the Covenant leader Iphæyûs. The fortress was founded on the northwestern shores of the Baying Lake. Throughout the Creation War, it served as a base of operations against the marauding armies of Geb. Faced with stone titans, earth giants, earth elementals, and primordial monstrosities, the walls and towers of Marakellûth were built to be exceptionally tall and robust.
In the Demon Spawn War, sector Sava'loth was left undefended against the demon advance. This was part of Asmodeus's grand military strategy to hold some, but not all, of the Brucrumus's battle sectors. Troops under the demon lord Demogorgon pillaged the area, desecrating sites dedicated to the heroes of the previous conflict. They transformed the place into a supply depot for their northward push towards the armies of Avandra in the Great Expanse. At the war's conclusion, the Covenant victors cleansed, repaired, and then abandoned Marakellûth, leaving it to the wilderness as the region was deemed unsuitable for any mortal civilizations at the time.
In 544, disenfranchised Rúmil elves came to the dilapidated site and established a settlement. The following year, it became the capital of the Ithendelt Empire. Then, in 799, the Ithendelts were compelled to abandon the city due to the persistent raids of roving Jara bands that prevented local farmers from tending their fields. After the elves' departure, nature once more reclaimed the ruins. Today, the area serves as the abode of malevolent creatures, with leucrottas, displacer beasts, cockatrices, and medusae being the most common denizens.
