Oratu Iru is an impressive fortification situated at the heart of Boulder Toss Pass. It was constructed during the God Era by Tharuz, the son of Danzar-Khâl, collaborating with thousands of skilled Turkûn artisans and hundreds of stone giants. The Turkûn, renowned for their mastery of stonework and construction, outshone their counterparts in martial prowess. The stone giants were descendants of those who had previously served Geb during the Creation War. In an effort to make amends, Geb encouraged these former adversaries of the Nawirrûs Covenant to instead support the Covenant during the Demon Spawn War, which spanned from 89 GE to 269 GE.
The Turkûn and the stone giants performed the bulk of the work in constructing Oratu Iru. Covenant enchanters were brought in to magically fortify sections of the wall that were not guarded by bands of Naanabrak. The builders exhausted the supply of this type of stone in the pass and contemplated retrieving more from Ag Krenok. Tharus wanted to construct the entire wall from this anti-magic stone, but the plan was rejected by Asmodeus, who stated there was insufficient time to build such a formidable structure.
Oratu Iru is nearly a mile in length, with the lowermost fighting deck situated 50 feet above the ground. The base of the wall measures an impressive 400 feet in thickness. The wall is sloped and tiered, featuring 5 distinct fighting decks spaced 50 feet apart. This architectural design was modeled after the fortifications utilized by Naraz-Nâru at Nâzel.
The legions of Orcus are encroaching, drawing nearer with each passing day, an unceasing torrent pouring forth from Ghak.
Tharuz, from his field journal - "Observations of the War"
In the Hoof Front (215 GE - 230 GE), Oratu Iru was assailed by Orcus's demonic legions. Despite the relentless onslaught, they never succeeded in conquering the city. The most harrowing engagement was the Nightmare Onslaught, a battle that occurred under the cover of a deep magical fog. Nearly 10,000 demons attacked the city walls, and after breaching the defenses, a great melee ensued for sixteen grueling hours. The tide turned when Asmodeus teleported to a zone free for magical transport and joined the fight, felling scores of enemies while fighting side by side with Tharuz. Outside the walls, Bahamut and his retinue of gold dragons made strafing runs against the demons clambering up the wall, targeting the openings rapidly being dug out by the demon worms, aptly referred to as bores. These translucent worms were far less resistant to fire than the demons, burning in a noxious smoke that even the surrounding demons struggled to withstand. Oratu Iru emerged victorious that day, its resilience tested but not broken.
When Orcus's forces reached Agiid Hil, Oratu Iru was situated 150 miles behind enemy lines, and still subject to continuous assault. Five months later, during Operation Crab Advance, the defenders of Oratu Iru were filled with relief upon sighting the banners of Asmodeus ascending the pass. Their supreme general, mounted upon a colossal dinosaur battletitan, saluted them and then proclaimed in a magically amplified voice, "Open the Gates." This marked the first occasion that the gates of Oratu Iru had been opened since their initial installation.
After the demons were expelled to the Abyss, and the deities and celestials withdrew from the realm, Oratu Iru was left to the wilderness. It became the abode of roaming stone giants and untamed creatures scattered throughout living quarters that once accommodated a garrison of fifteen thousand across numerous tiers.
The stone giants of this region have long utilized Oratu Iru to control and secure the pass. Tolls collected from travelers are allocated for maintenance and security purposes. The area changed possession during the March of Resalth (898 HE - 933 HE), with Balfroglemis capturing the wall. Following the collapse of the Dominon of Resalth, the stone giants reclaimed their ancestral homes in Oratu Iru.
