The Bangasûza fjord is situated near the convergence of Salzârrâk's northeastern currents and the Sea of Mourning. Over the course of millennia, this churning motion has carved into the landscape, sweeping the soft earth and clay out to sea and leaving only rugged stone in its wake. This erosion was further exacerbated by the arc of islands to the east, which give rise to howling winds and the area's frequently inclement weather. Where the fjord channel meets the open sea, the land remains barren stone for miles in every direction, serving as a natural landmark for maritime navigation.
The pirates who settled Ma'Ohari's northern coasts and the nearby Buccaneer Archipelago viewed Bangasûza as a last resort to weather a storm. During the First Epoch, it sheltered harpies and even some demons who had once served Varelay.
In the Great Exodus spanning nearly two decades from 998 to 1017, the fjord's colossal sea caves, some extending miles into the towering cliffs, functioned as pirate trading hubs. There, they would unload merchandise and captives seized from the ceaseless ships traversing the Sea of Mourning.
The Great Exodus ushered in an era of rampant piracy, yielding unparalleled prosperity. The most notorious captains emerged from Bangasûza, including Harpy commanders whose lilting melodies could sway even the most hostile foes, and Cambion leaders whose crews craved carnage over treasure.
Inu Nuškad, the venerable captain - "The Captains of Bangasûza"
In 1467, the undead admiral-king Jairall, commander of the Black Tide navy, seized control of Salandirik. He nullified a longstanding treaty with Yaram's scrags. For over four centuries, this treaty had prohibited the use of the Yaram river for trade or settlement. Jairall's decision, and the ensuing conflict, ultimately drove the Scrag tribes northward to Bangasûza. Confronted by these dangerous refugees, most of Bangasûza's harpies and other fell creatures departed the region.
In 1797, the Burterinii-Buccaneer Alliance were granted access to the fjord. This was an unprecedented occurrence, as Bangasûza's scrag had grown increasingly xenophobic, embittered by their expulsion from Yaram and confinement by the massive coastal fortresses of Bloodtusk's regime. Furthermore, under King Jairall, they were hunted for sport, with games that involved participants swimming through scrag-infested waters. After the Burterinii-Bloodtusk War (1795 - 1800), it was discovered that a powerful druid, Beldirothe, herself a scrag and newly appointed Nature Protectorate of the Ma'Ohari region, had orchestrated the effort to sway scrag opinion.
