The ancient ruins of Frosvirk are situated in a vast field of ebony ice called Maen Fyrk. Frosvirk and Maen Fyrk are shielded by a boundary ward. This force field was erected by the eldritch giants during the final days of Frosvirk. The Maen Fyrk Boundary Ward is unstable and has gaps, so occasionally the undead horrors of this area escape into Ice Cap and beyond. The most perilous undead of the region are winterwights, the transformed remnants of some eldritch giants who perished at Frosvirk.

In the Lith-Crillion Era, the Thraedli founded Frosvirk in an icy vale of dense evergreen timbers. Frosvirk was constructed with blocks of blue-ice, the same blue-ice ubiquitous in Ice Cap, and reinforced with arcane-hardened heavy timbers. These were strengthened with esoteric magic, rendering them as unyielding as lava stone. They built this place with such fortitude due to what they were creating and unleashing within Frosvirk's massive halls and chambers. At this citadel, eldritch giant necromancers sought to explore and learn all the dark necromancy contained in the Scrolls of Maen. This sinister study became a school of necromancy known as Maen Saetild.

The necromantic horrors created at Frosvirk were a key factor in the rise of the small empire of Saer Erkjorg's dominance over its neighbors. The dark magic of Maen Saetild also led to the downfall of Frosvirk itself. The necromancers attempted to forge a powerful soul-devouring weapon, but this unleashed a terrifying entity from the Abyss that consumed all the souls at Frosvirk. Some of the slain arose as winterwights, nightcrawlers, vampires, and other potent undead beings. The area surrounding Frosvirk was tainted with necromantic energies, forming the blighted landscape known as Maen Fyrk. When the Thraedli of Miradalêth learned of the devastation at Frosvirk, they dispatched powerful wizards to contain the necromantic threat. In 1611 LE, eldritch arcanists employed a Lith-Crillion spell, alongside Tolm monoliths, to establish a boundary ward around Frosvirk and Maen Fyrk. This field of force became known as the Maen Fyrk Boundary Ward.
