Neben-Skerah was constructed as an underground religious complex by devotees of Tiamat. In 1412 HE, the tyrannical dragon ruler of Galirkrad was overthrown by church factions seeking to end his cruelty - or so they claimed, though it appears the religious leaders of Neben-Skerah desired absolute authority. Undoubtedly, Tiamat was behind the push for change, as Galirkrad's ruler was a dictator focused on personal power rather than propagating the faith of Tiamat. When the church seized control, Neben-Skerah became part of the newly established theocratic empire.
In 1725 HE, the city atop Neben-Skerah, Viing Prolgiid, was plundered by the Kobold hordes of Ashmerthoon. The conquest of this city brought about the downfall of the Theocracy of Galirkrad. Far below, the heavily fortified Neben-Skerah weathered the ensuing chaos. With the collapse of the empire, Neben-Skerah's sphere of influence transitioned from serving church zealots to engaging in illicit activities.
The northern district of Neben-Skerah is the oldest, where the passages upward have been sealed off with blocks and great magic. The southern district, offering vistas into Viing'deyvut, lies a thousand feet below but still affords glimpses of the sky overhead. The eastern and western districts, meanwhile, delve deeper into the shadowy expanse of Adunamar.
Whitefang has its headquarters here. They control the sole remaining chute to the surface that stayed open even during the great siege of Viing Prolgiid. This immense crevice is so colossal that even the largest of dragons can fly past the surface ruins above and across the vast cavern ceiling over Neben-Skerah, continuing south to Viing Lok. The Ashmerthoon feared this enormous cavity, the Viing'deyvut, for it was here that the Second Dragon Wake (1361 LE - 1366 LE) commenced, a flight of dragons awakened to halt giants from violating a sacred site to the dragons of not only the Aerie of Dragons, but across the world.
By the First Epoch, the city-state of Neben-Skerah had become a formidable presence, with Tiamat proselytizers and Whitefang cultists disseminating their sway across Adunamar and to the surface.
Neben-Skerah is renowned for its arenas, gladiator pits, and perilous obstacle courses. They serve as the subterranean counterpart to the grand arenas of Ivory Asylum.
