Monty hailed from the ancient dwarven ruins of Strumpktar. Purportedly abandoned as an infant, he was reared by a hag and thus lacks a family lineage.

During Black Banner's incursion into the Eastern Shar, they stumbled upon an unsettling spectacle, which subsequently spawned the moniker Monty the Mad:

The malicious flind was engaging in carnal relations with a troll! Monty wore the most viciously spiked armor, which lacerated the troll deeply, yet her regenerative abilities sustained her. Meanwhile, trollhounds greedily lapped up the blood like a kitten with a bowl of milk - a most remarkable sight at the time - now I smile and toast Monty with a goblet of chilled elven blood.

Dax Jagg, from his autobiographical work - "My Encounter With Monty"

Long a mercenary to the Orchish Empire, Monty garnered admiration through his commanding presence, the fear he instilled, and his triumphs in combat.

In 1446, Defilnus and Monty commenced a protracted entanglement, punctuated by intermittent hiatuses spanning years and decades. Even after Monty's transformation into a death knight in 1501, the pair continued to make public appearances at the empire's grandest ceremonies, adorned in sumptuous regalia of immense monetary and perilous magical value.

In the year 1470, Monty and his mercenary band, Monty's Marauders, seized control of the aerial fortress of Avalkhirân.

On the battlefield, Monty demonstrated exceptional strategic and tactical prowess. During the Gimhak War (1470 - 1479), he was rapidly promoted to the rank of lieutenant and became a member of the Fograth.

In 1479, leading the second assault on Tharam-Khâl, Monty's unit was ruthlessly decimated by a pair of slaughterstone behemoths. Despite the heavy casualties, another attack was launched that same night. A team managed to infiltrate the chamber of the constructs, recovering Monty's crushed and eviscerated corpse. Monty was then transported to Úrwath, where necromancers devoted to Gruumsh, under the watchful eye of Monty's former lover, commenced the process of transforming him into a death knight.

In 1660, Emperor Blac'drugulois approached Monty the Mad with an irresistible offer. The Emperor bestowed upon him the prestigious title of Arch-Dragern of the Armies, but with a catch. Monty had to eliminate the one he loved to prove his unwavering loyalty to the emperor. Monty's lover, the powerful necromancer Defilnus, commanded a chapter of the fearsome Rat Swarm guild. Wererat spies soon learned of the deal between Monty and the Emperor, shortly after his departure from Gháshulg. When Monty returned to Collossapolos, he found Defilnus entrenched in her fortress, unaware of the intricate underground labyrinth spanning four levels beneath the city. It took a full year to finally track her down and carry out the Emperor's directive. Upon eliminating Defilnus, a powerful curse was activated. The weapon enchanted by Defilnus and given to her former lover, a relic known as Tiamat's Spur, became the focus of the curse. Tiamat's Spur teleported away from Monty, who sensed its presence nearby. He and his teams scoured the area, digging new tunnels and exploring the subterranean levels under Collossapolos, ultimately leading to the expansion of the city's underside, The Twelve Tiers.

In the year 1832, Emperor Blac'drugulois was assassinated. Following a brief period of civil unrest (see Second Orchish Civil War), Monty ascended as the second emperor of the Orchish Empire.
