In the Demon Spawn War ( 89 GE - 269 GE ) , scavengers who served Orcus discovered scattered Demiurgic Iron across the expanse of Sotiisk'lum. Some of this rare metal eventually made its way back to Orcus's home world of Thanatos.
At the forge of Naratyr, Orcus's preeminent forge master, a babau named Ongruxiel, crafted an anvil from searing Demiurgic Iron, cooling it within a vat of angelic blood. The result, after the application of formidable enchantments, was an anvil capable of forging weapons perilous to the divine. Thousands of arrowheads were produced upon this anvil, the majority finding their way into the quivers of Orcus's arrow demons.
In 131 GE, the Covenant dispatched a team of elite commandos deep into enemy territory. Though an exceptionally perilous mission for typical special operations units, the Covenant sent their finest, with Atlas, Lukoon, and Phalgas traveling to the fortress of Naratyr. Fortunately, Orcus and a substantial portion of his forces were mobilizing to counter a diversionary invasion led by a Covenant commander named Dispater. Despite the garrison still expected to number in the thousands, Lukoon devised a plan to utilize one of Orcus's own pets against his own forces. Sneaking inside, Lukoon and Phalgas discreetly eliminated any obstacles and disposed of them in Lukoon's bag of devouring, while also drawing the attention of Cerberus. Concurrently, Atlas leveraged his seemingly limitless strength to break the chain restraining the most fearsome hound in all creation. As Cerberus realized his newfound freedom, he lost interest in the trio and instead sought to wreak vengeance upon those who had long tormented him. With the demon hound drawing away the garrison, the Covenant trio proceeded to the forge. In this area, they eliminated the forge master. Unwilling to touch an anvil radiating such profound evil, Atlas wrapped it in a section of Cerberus's chain and dragged it out of Naratyr.
Back on Bal-Kriav, the anvil was transported to the pinnacle of the Aerie of Dragons, where it was immersed in a minuscule measure of Bal-Kriav's blood. For the duration of the conflict, the redeemed magical item known as the Anvil of Ongruxiel was utilized in the crafting of superior-grade armor and armaments.
Located within the Cloud Forge, the Anvil of Ongruxiel remained steadfast, safeguarded by the formidable Chain of Cerberus. A remarkable magical construct, the very same chain that Atlas used to envelop the anvil, it boasts a strength rivaling that of a dozen blutium golems.
