In the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE), a momentous battle unfolded in the subterranean reaches of Faeglor. The primordial lord Surtur engaged in a clash with the archangel Arcana. At the time, Arcana, a solar, was surveying the area for magical emanations seeping from Ice Cap. She encountered Surtur as he made final preparations to detonate a null mine. Though warned of his presence, Arcana's curiosity regarding the magical streams led her to intervene. In the ensuing confrontation, Arcana lost an arm, triggering a Contingency spell that teleported her to the safety of Achamâz. Surtur then cast the severed limb into the null mine and detonated it, creating a rift between the world Bal-Kriav and the elemental world Muspelheim. The resulting lava flow formed a lake that Surtur named Arnergal, after one of his favored guard maidens. To this day, the rift remains open, feeding the lava that powers the volcanoes of Borngring. The explosion also imbued Arcana's lost arm with a wellspring of arcane energy.

In the year 1850 HE, the Mîmêk constructed the settlement Lordak Kadrin on a lava stone plateau overlooking this fiery lake. It is believed they were attracted to this region by Arnergal's mystical radiations. Following several decades, the residents of Lordak Kadrin renounced Tarâk and adopted Arcana as their patron deity.

In the Second Epoch, having been banished from the Khazarkar Empire, the Eldritch Conclave arrived in this region and laid claim to the ruins of Lordak Kadrin. They rechristened the site Malardân. Arcanists who have visited Malardân report that the very atmosphere seems infused with magic, growing progressively more potent the closer one draws to the heart of Arnergal. They note that their arcane pools are replenished 20% faster here, and that the crafting of magical items is markedly easier.

Traversing Arnergal poses grave peril, with oppressive heat and thick smoke sufficient to repel all but the most fire-resistant entities. The region is beset by fire trolls and salamanders, as well as countless fire and smoke mephits.
