Entropic Eddies are regions of entropic emanations that often lead to increased chaos for those dwelling nearby. They were first created by the Eldalweril and the work continued with the Urthin-Mejin. Specialized drow arcanists of these empires use entropic eddies to destabilize peripheral areas of the vast Taurquion forest. This sometimes causes issues with governing the frontiers of the High Wood Country, with the Tendrils being particularly vulnerable areas.
The same entropic energy that was used to create the Abyss, before it was tainted with evil, powers the Entropic Eddies. These eddies resemble Rifts, but only energy can pass through them, rendering them exceptionally challenging to repair even for those with the requisite mastery. Owing to this fact and potentially other perilous concerns, weave spiders will generally only seek to mend these tears in the Web of Magic when they have grown excessively large or unstable.
The first Entropic Eddy emerged during the High Down War (1285 - 1304), when Lolth bestowed ancient magic, created by the primordial Piranoth, upon a conclave of arcanists in Hyassalmo. They generated eddies of invisible, chaotic energy in remote areas and near the Tendrils of Taurquion. Those exposed to these nearly imperceptible pockets grew increasingly chaotic, with the alignment shift progressing rapidly over a couple of months, rendering them increasingly unmanageable by the ruling empires and city-states, including Angrod, RĂºmil, Witch Horde, Antokepf, and Rumaktharga. In some cases, those under considerable stress either became enlightened and turned chaotic good, or were broken, thereby becoming chaotic evil. The Amras Calafalas of Angrod were one group that fell victim to the latter fate.
Those exposed to an Entropic Eddy initially become chaotically aligned, and as they continue to receive entropic energy, they grow so autonomous and unpredictable that they sever ties with the empire or city-state they once answered to. Across the High Wood Country, there are numerous small and medium-sized groups that have succumbed to the effects of an Entropic Eddy and now answer to no one but themselves.
