The tritons are an aquatic race inhabiting the salt water seas and oceans across the realm. They are the progeny of Triton, son of Poseidon and Amphitrite. For a duration during the Creation War ( 1486 DE - 8777 DE ) , they served under General Triton, who in turn served his Primordial father, Poseidon. Midway through the Creation War, Triton changed allegiances, joining the angelic forces of the Nawirrûs Covenant. The tritons found themselves on the world Bal-Kriav, defending the oceans from primordial aggression. In some of the war's conflicts, they engaged in battle against Poseidon's forces, whom they had once fought alongside earlier in the war.
Merfolk and tritons possess remarkably similar physiques. In contrast to Merfolk, the majority of triton civilizations exhibit a xenophobic attitude when interacting with non-aquatic peoples. Compared to merfolk, tritons boast a more fish-like appearance and move through the seas with greater velocity. Their hearing and sight are nearly three times more acute than the average merfolk. Some evolutionary scholars posit that tritons are merfolk who have continued to evolve in a more piscine direction, rather than towards a hybrid aquatic humanoid form. Certain tritons, such as the Revered Mothers, have undergone a truly remarkable transformation, developing squid-like lower bodies while retaining a humanoid upper half. Many of these Revered Mothers serve as priests of Poseidon.
The Bal-Kriav region is home to two distinct triton populations: those with permanent settlements akin to those found on the surface, and nomadic tritons whose dwellings are constructed within submersible pods that drift with the ocean currents. Some of these migratory pods are vast, housing entire underwater cities. Naturally, these city-pods are restricted to areas of significant depth. Certain pods are dedicated solely to warfare, their inhabitants continuing a martial tradition dating back to the tritons' service alongside Higher Powers during the Creation War and their subsequent conflict against the abyssal hordes of the Demon Spawn War.
