In 1461, the Orchish Empire launched an invasion of the southern territories controlled by Gimhak. Their objective was territorial expansion, coupled with a desire for retribution following the events of the Arduous March (1041 - 1096). This forced migration, which originated from Tarkrath, had seen the orcs (before their transformation into the Githirmil) harried and attacked by numerous adversaries. The Turkûn of Gathol proved to be the most formidable of these. Despite sustaining heavy losses, the orcs eventually managed to reach Grashakh. Their leader, Blac'drugulois, vowed to one day punish those who had made their perilous journey so much more challenging.

In the First Sorrow Pass War, four centuries after the Arduous March, the Orchish Empire's advance was directed southward. They crossed into a valley strewn with ruins, a strategic chokepoint that links three regions: Hells Womb, Grashakh, and the Lands of Purity. Sorrow Pass had witnessed numerous battles and conflicts, and the First Sorrow Pass War would prove to be the most significant in the area since the Demon Spawn War.

The orc armies were halted as they approached the Gathol Hills. The defenders had entrenched themselves behind extensive networks of trenches, with tunnels connecting 24 fortified hill positions. The Fograth spent two arduous years attempting to breach through to Strumpktar. They would capture hills only to lose them again when shifting their focus to another target.

The defenders launched a counteroffensive in 1463 after the renowned Orders of the Council of Bile, the Apocalypse Corps and the Grisagwer, maneuvered behind the Fograth army, imperiling their supply lines. Heavily damaged, the invaders withdrew back through the Sorrow Pass.
