By the conclusion of the Great Minotaur Revolt ( 785 - 796 ) , the minotaurs had secured their emancipation from the First Khazarkar Empire. In Azrik, they diverged into two factions. The more peacefully-inclined, those aspiring to establish their own civilization, ventured northward. The warmongers, considering the constructive process too gradual, traveled southward and in 798 founded Bâlê. Three years later and three hundred miles to the north, Ilfongrak was established, overlooking a grand fjord.

During the Domination Wars ( 995 - 1016 ) and subsequently the Gulimbor Cataclysm, Ilfongrak became the new sanctuary for thousands of Tragaran refugees. They joined a city then inhabited by minotaurs and several earth and stone giants.

While their southern neighbor, having become the Ba'lith Empire by conquest, got entangled in the Horn Tusk Conflict (1023 - 1467), they turned to nation building, establishing robust trade relations with overseas empires. This influx brought in a multitude of Gimrune from Angvild Isle. They were drawn here by state-sponsored explorations into Gulimbor and excavations of locations devastated during the Gulimbor Cataclysm (996 - 1203).

The aggression of their southern neighbor, steadily intensifying over time, prompted the formation of the Torgilm Confederacy ( 1475 - 1719 ) .

In 1672, the signing of the Treaty of Droorlow recognized the territorial boundaries of the north and south. Ba'lith claimed all territory south of Droorlow and east of the Ezdynn River. Ilfongrak relinquished the fortress Marmarath and agreed to assist Ba'lith in addressing their bug problem - the Locust Encroachment ( 1412 - 1694 ) . This aid involved the construction of the Sonic Horns along Ba'lith's southern border.

In 1719, the armies of Ba'lith seized Ilfongrak, the epicenter of the Torgilm Confederacy. Officially, they had been eliminated from the Brothers Enmity War ( 1697 - 1723 ) . While true on paper, a protracted guerrilla conflict was yet to come.

The conquerors constructed the Fountain of Unity at the city's entryway. This bovine-shaped statue functions as a memorial commemorating the unification of all minotaurs of Azrik under a single sovereign state.

Ilfongrak is home to a diverse array of races, including minotaurs, earth giants, stone giants, bugbears, Maleraunts, and Tragarans. The Maleraunts began arriving with the fall of the Bloodtusk Regime ( 1807 ) . Driven from Bloodtusk's former strongholds and accustomed to the comforts of civilization, most Maleraunts bypassed their ancestral homelands in the Kilth Mountains and instead traveled south to Azrik, a place where tales of glory, war, and plunder were becoming increasingly prevalent.

Prior to their diminution and substitution by the Church of Asmodeus, the city housed temples dedicated to Naraz-Nâru and Poseidon.
