Near the northwestern border of the Lands of Purity stands a revered citadel known as Magis Institute. Established during the Dawn Era, it has long functioned as a training ground for arcanists destined to battle the primordials and subsequently the demons.
Built with fantastic architecture, this monolithic structure boasts numerous towers and walls that defy the laws of physics. Some structures float on air motes, while others move independently through magical means. For the first century of its operation, it served as the home of Arcana. During the early years of the Creation War (1486 DE - 8777 DE), Arcana, destined to become a deity, served as the school's headmaster. Under her leadership and that of another future god, they founded the Grand Arcanes, a Covenant faction focused on all things magical.
In 1345, Nevicanad accidentally stumbled upon the Magis Institute. Lost since the Angelic Departure (270 GE - 274 GE), the Institute had been concealed for thousands of years by powerful magic, invisible and untouched. It is said that Nevicanad unraveled the mystery of its location from a Scroll of Dawn. Upon reaching the site, he then had to reveal something that had been intentionally hidden by the Covenant's leaders. This required a complex ritual, one thought to be known only to Arcana, a spell called Pocket Dimension, which could conceal an entire mountain within another dimension, frozen in time. The source of Nevicanad's knowledge of this ritual remains a mystery, with some speculating it may have been the work of Lukoon, although this remains unproven.
In the subsequent years, Nevicanad instructed numerous budding wizards. The Magis Institute evolved into a haven of knowledge and scholarship for mages of all affiliations.
The Magis Institute offers educational programs encompassing a wide range of arcane disciplines. Within the domain of necromancy, training is restricted to the third level. The sole arcane practice the institution does not instruct is web weaving.
The Magis Institute is overseen by a sizable council of neutrally aligned arcanists. Some serve as instructors, while others function as administrators or enforcers. The latter carry out their duties with the assistance of monitor orbs - enhanced, sentient variants of the dreaded sphere of annihilation. These entities execute death sentences on those who violate rules regarding unsanctioned combat, sabotage, or lack the Institute's authorizing mark - a magical tattoo signifying clearance to be present on the premises.
Curnerous brazenly assailed a despised adversary this day. Narrowly escaping death from a blazing fireball, a monitor orb materialized, pronouncing judgment upon the transgressor. Conforming to the Writ of Annihilation, Curnerous vanished into the orb.
excerpt from Incident Report, 12 Artifice 1530
The Magis Institute boasts Bal-Kriav's most extensive golem collection, housing well over 1,000 specimens distributed throughout the interior and exterior. Some of these golems have stood sentry since the Demon Spawn War, while others are senior class projects, a mandatory graduation requirement for which students must fund the construction. The substantial cost leads many to pursue adventuring or alternative vocations to fulfill their academic obligations, as exemplified by the famed Golem Serpent of Undercity.
Some never graduate from the Magis Institute, instead learning the subsequent stages of their craft independently or under the tutelage of another. Those who do obtain a degree bear a distinctive status, trust, and occasionally secure more favorable prices for the items they enchant.
The infamous Mad Wizard Flay is rumored to have acquired expertise in golem construction from the countless tomes housed within the Institute's seemingly boundless library. One of the more renowned texts on golem manufacture is the celebrated Book of Orinite.
Members of the Magis Institute can obtain rare spells, spell components, and information. The cost of membership in one of its schools is 1,000 gold pieces per level of the mage. The schools welcome individuals of any moral alignment. Unsanctioned combat is strictly prohibited.
