The gnoll race was created when Ingu'lumin bestowed the demon lord Yeenoghu with a Spark of Creation. This fleeting coalescence of life energy granted Yeenoghu the power to create new lifeforms, akin to that of a Tier 3 Creationist. Yeenoghu then fashioned the gnolls as a diminished version of himself, with a more stooped stature, oscillating between quadrupedal and bipedal movement.

The demon prince Yeenoghu, following the Demon Spawn War, retreated to the Abyss with his armies of demons and gnolls. However, he left over a thousand gnolls behind on the world of Bal-Kriav. Under the direction of Ingu'lumin, these gnolls were tasked with establishing a civilization in Yeenoghu's name. This marked the beginnings of a civilization that would garner remarkable renown, despite the typically barbaric, fragmented, and chaotic nature of the gnoll race.

The gnolls of Bal-Kriav originated in Zyrath, at a locale known as Kennel. As this settlement expanded, contingents of the creatures departed in search of prized hunting territories. This sparked a prolonged era wherein numerous gnolls embraced a highly nomadic lifestyle, dispersing outward to pursue game across many domains of Brucrumus and potentially beyond.

Though they are often perceived today as highly chaotic and barbaric, the gnolls of the Northern Hordelands once managed to establish a series of strong and stable empires. During this period of Enlightenment , which spanned several hundred years from the Drugnod Dynasty to the Yagamph, the gnolls attained a level of civilization that exceeded typical expectations. Sociologists have attributed this heightened civilization to the influence of Ingu'lumin, a primordial disembodied thinker who lived among the gnolls for five centuries, guiding their civilization and instilling discipline in their chaotic tendencies. Ingu'lumin's aim was to facilitate several thousand years of progress before the gnolls began reverting to the temperament of their creator.

The largest gnoll empire of Midrêth is Garormuk.
