In the Demon Spawn War ( 89 GE - 269 GE ) , the intelligence apparatus was the driving force behind the centers of conflict. These units were responsible for gathering information, conducting covert operations, and eliminating enemy leaders and other key personnel. For elements of the Covenant, this unsavory work was a necessary part of their operations. The department headed by General Lukoon was tasked with deception, sowing confusion, and exacerbating rivalries. The Fihrgrell Cap, a remarkable glacial formation at the northeastern edge of Sector Vetoubahr, was the result of an operation to trick the demon lord Gorag'theg and create a rivalry between him and the demon lord Graz'zt.
The opening of the Moredhel-Fihrgrell Rift (233 GE) was the first part of what Lukoon designated Operation Mindbender. The rift's opening was the initial phase of the deception. Gorag'theg, one of the less astute demon lords comprising the Abyssal Hegemony, was provided the coordinates of a vulnerable spot in The Weave. In exchange for this information, a Covenant agent acquired a null mine. The agreement's wording indicated that a properly placed null mine would "open a channel to the sea" - a rare commodity during that period of the war. Gorag'theg interpreted this to mean the rift would face northward towards the Sea of Mourning, as his demon armies hailed from the sea. This was a key aspect of the deception, as the wording in the translated Abyssal version differed from the original Supernal, where "sea channel" carried a more general meaning. When the rift opened, it did so to the south, creating a steady flow westward towards what the horned folk of Ba'lith refer to as the Minotaur Inlet, a sea channel separating two continents.
A towering surge of seawater cascaded down the Moredhel Valley, engulfing one of Graz'zt's armies. The foul-smelling, tainted waters of the abyssal Fihrgrell Ocean flooded portions of the valley, transforming it into saline ponds and lakes that served as hunting grounds for Gorag'theg's lackeys.
excerpt from the Moredhel Incident
The rift caused conflict between two demon lords, one brilliant and the other a brutish force. Graz'zt lost an army, while Gorag'theg's forces were scattered across the flooded valley. Many of these were aquatic demons, ill-suited for land. Thousands found themselves trapped in areas where they could not survive. As recounted in the " Moredhel Incident " by a demon chronicler, Graz'zt saw the loss of an army as a small price to pay to witness Gorag'theg's forces tricked and diminished. After the initial surge, seawater continued flowing from the rift, reaching the coasts. This new river became a natural obstacle for Graz'zt's armies marching towards the Elphion Forest, which was home to Gorag'theg's aquatic creatures, now rampaging out of control after being carried through the rift. The conflict between the two lords resulted in much of Azrik's lowlands remaining under the Covenant's control. The damage from the otherworldly river persisted until 237 GE, when a counter-rift was established at the Ratanur Trap.
Near the end of the Demon Spawn War, after Graz'zt was driven back to the Abyss, the Quarat'un Covenant had Thyrm encase the rift's opening in magical ice. To ensure the permanence of this measure, they empowered it with The Frozen Titan. This primordial, lobotomized by the demons, is what keeps the Moredhel-Fihrgrell Rift contained. The Fihrgrell Cap, a frigid glacier, surrounds this entire area. As seawater continues to flow through the still-open rift, it freezes at the titan's head, gradually pushing upward and outward. The expanding ice is naturally kept in check, melting under the rays of Merioss and Khâls Forge.
By the middle of the Lith-Crillion Era, the region's glacial melt had transformed Sorfandien into a verdant valley, abundant in wildlife and host to vast equine herds.
