South of Hell's Womb and across the Sea of Mourning, the rainy, sweltering, and oppressively humid region known as Ma'Ohari sprawls. Towering mountain ranges in the interior encircle extensive marshes, while a labyrinth of rivers winds through the dense, primeval jungles.
In the Lith-Crillion Era, the demon empire Varelay ruled much of eastern Ma'Ohari; sector Tha'lith. Varelay was perpetually occupied with substantial state initiatives, embroiled in wars, or experiencing periods of civil unrest and purges. The empire's demon leaders kept the populace constantly engaged in laborious tasks. One such endeavor was the extensive mining operations. Deep mines were constructed solely to maintain the people in a state of toil and exhaustion. The colossal mining project east of Mughakh-Gol, known as Project Fez Namex 12, persisted unabated for two centuries. This endeavor precipitated such environmental devastation that it altered the eruption cycles of the area's three volcanoes. The heightened volcanic activity triggered earthquakes, ash storms, lava flows, and substantial environmental damage both on the surface and underground. This cataclysmic period was the Varelay Upheaval (2608 LE - 16 HE), an event that transformed the marsh of Styming into a lake, converted Gurutharni from mostly jungle to mostly swamp, and led to the sinking of the Tilnangau capital.
The blighted lands of Malephar, once the heart of the Varelay Empire, now fall under the dominion of Goth-Dyvermoir. Though they assert authority over the region, their control remains incomplete. Intrepid travelers who brave the scorching magma, oppressive heat, and choking smoke of Malephar must contend with roaming fire elementals, Gol'hakh, the occasional scion of the Reds of Kilth, packs of hell hounds, or marauding fire giants.
In the First Epoch, a victim of the Gulimbor Cataclysm ( 996 - 1203 ) , the Burterinii empire resettled along the region's northeastern coastlines. This area is characterized by expansive and windswept plains with black volcanic soil. Zaura's prosperous farms and pastures led to the Burterinii becoming the primary provider of agricultural goods for the entire region, with trade flowing northward to Brucrumus and into the Buccaneer Archipelago.
In the Second Epoch, adhering to imperial expansion doctrines, the Ivory Asylum established a colony on Ma'Ohari's western shores; in the sector of Anutoth. Expanding northward from Tâchumâz, they added Salandirik to their list of holdings. Meanwhile, pirate bases along the northern coasts profited from their neighbor's heavy trade. Pirate strongholds like Raci-Tuc and Ren-Jorusk evolved from their lawless origins, becoming autonomous city-states.
In the Black Tide War ( 1465 - 1486 ) , Ivory Asylum lost its Ma'Ohari colonial possessions. The pirate holds and these territories became the property of the Bloodtusk Regime. Ownership of these lands would change once more during the Burterinii-Bloodtusk War ( 1795 - 1800 ) . After this conflict, governance of many of the region's western holds reverted to a state resembling the period prior to Ivory Asylum's arrival.
The subterranean Underdark domain situated beneath Ma'Ohari is referred to as Dhark Bolg.
