The former appellation of the Abyss is Piranoth's Steps. This designation arose from the fact that it was constructed by the eminent primordial of creation, Piranoth. The "steps" symbolized the worlds that Piranoth fashioned from Chaos. The inaugural world, the Step of Foundation, materialized in 1 DE. Although not entirely comprehended, the realms Piranoth conjured became tainted by the Threads of Damnation. This unholy energy conduit corrupted the primordial's chaos aberrations, transforming them into what are now known as demons.
When the Nawirrus Covenant defeated the primordials in the Creation War ( 1486 DE - 8777 DE ) , Piranoth was so enraged that he hastily abandoned his worlds to the demons. His departure was so abrupt that numerous primordial relics were left behind. Some of these were items capable of opening Rifts to distant star systems, which would later be utilized extensively during their invasion of the Quara'tun System.
During the Abyssal Release ( 7777 DE - 8777 DE ) , the once-obscure Piranoth's Steps rose to notoriety as the Abyss, the domain of the demon lords and their demonic legions.
When the Abyss was established in the most remote corners of Chaos, it is said that the malevolence emanating from this domain corrupted certain of the mighty primordials. Demogorgon, Baphomet, and Orcus were primordials who became infused with entropy and unholy energy, reshaped into the likeness of pure destructive malignance. They transformed into the demon lords, sovereigns of entire worlds. Upon vanquishing the primordials, we paved the way for the demonic invasion of additional realms.

In the Demon Spawn War ( 89 GE - 269 GE ) , the worlds of the Quara'tun System were invaded by the demonic overlords. Desperate measures were taken to repel the incursion.
The enemy must be confronted on their own terms. Our strategies must be as ruthless as theirs if we are to halt the horde's advance. Moreover, if our operatives are to infiltrate their ranks, they must adopt their very methods.
Bal-Kriav has been corrupted from the Abyss in several regions. During the Lith-Crillion Era, the demon empire Varelay reigned over Ma'Ohari for over a millennium. Many other parts of Quara'tun bear the taint of the demon war, such as Ladneg, once a world-traversing device now scattered across a northern swamp of Hells Womb.
There are numerous Rifts to the realms of the Abyss. During the Phael-Tetramord War ( 10 - 25 ) , the elves sought assistance from distant worlds in their struggle against the Tetramord. One of the Rifts they opened became permanent, establishing a bridge to a world under the dominion of Demogorgon. This gateway, the Ungorth Reddik Road, became an invasion route for Demogorgon's armies.
In the Black Tide War ( 1465 - 1486 ) , Katrana, one of the leaders of the First Dead Council, opened the Abyssal Funnel. Following the securing of the Sylvan Kingdoms by virtuous forces, a group of eminent mages, a druid, and the deity Arcana collaborated to close it.
